>> expect to wake up to the beginning of the this storm. snow showers just before dawn. most of us start with snow, and then the changeover and then it will move somewhat north. this is going to be throughout the day on saturday. it includes all of our northern count aies. hartford -- counties. hartford down through howard. not to say that areas across to kent island. you will get a few hours of snow in the morning, an inch or two of slush. temperatures now depends where you're looking at. we're below freezing in york. the freeze line will shift south overnight tonight. the storm is already moving to garret county, but the main storm is still well to the west

arriving in earnest through the morning hours. so snow showers by dawn increasing and picking up in intensity mid morning tomorrow. we're talking about a broad 1-3- inch raid across most of the baltimore region. we'll talk about this more and show you the detailed map straight ahead. >> the state says they are ready to handle whatever falls tomorrow from the skies. an is spokesperson says there are more than 2400 pieces of equipment and 2700 workers ready to hit the roads at midnight. crews have been clearing out drains and checking equipment in anticipation of this weekend's storm. be sure to keep yourself safe if you're driving. >> reporter: if you're heading from the baltimore area and heading west we would caution motorists to make sure you're planning ahead. traditionally the weather eup vents in western maryland are

were holding off on using it to protect the relationship of phylicia barnes and her family. now they have no choice than to use it to defend their client michael johnson. >> reporter: a team of attorneys is coming up with a plan on how a sex tape will play into the trial. michael johnson is charged with killing phylicia barnes, a north carolina teen visiting her family in baltimore for christmas two years ago. >> what's disturbing is one of the people happened to be an si engaged in sexual conduct. it's not with johnson. it's with another person. >> reporter: the defense team watched the recording which is from her cell phone and says phylicia barnes was involved in sex acts. barnes died from asphyxiation,

but -- >> there's no choking. there's no rough housing. no horse play, anything that's masochistic, how you would look at it. >> reporter: the defense has to respond to the state's request to close the courtroom for 16 minutes. they don't know why a sex tape with minors is worth playing in court. >> i think exposure to sex tapes at this period of time is appalling. it is basically about character assassination. >> reporter: there will witnessing twoidaries -- there will four months later her remains were found. her death was ruled a homicide a day later but it took another year to make an arrest. the defense won't tell us all their attacks, but one an is a

witness -- is a witness that claims he saw her alive. >> otherwise, if the state believed that she was murdered in cecil county then it would be there. >> the defense claims it shows johnson and barnes are friendly, which is quite different from what we've painted. that was back in april. it also brings in question if anyone will be charged with possessing child pornography. right now we don't know if dena barnes or anyone else will be charged. to close the courtroom, that will need to be determined before the date. now phylicia barnes was last seen dwoyears ago -- two years ago today. police searched for her, but it was months before there were any answers. the body was found in the river

in april last year and a month later it was determined she was killed by asphyxiation. it took a year before police arrested michael johnson and charged him with first degree murder. we've got an interactive time line of the phylicia barnes case on abc2news.com. two more shootings in the city today. the first happened at 1:30 this afternoon near clifton park. an 18-year-old man was shot in the leg. police are still investigating. two other men wounded when shots were fired in the 2500 block ofwoodbrook avenue. police found one man shot in the chest and a second shot in the buttocks. charges could be placed against the driver who lost control of their car on the dc

beltway that killed three people. two died at the scene. florentina gonzalez was also killed. the car skidded and was hit by two pickup trucks. topers are not identified -- troopers have not identified the driver who lost control. new developments tonight in the so called fiscal cliff. it's just four days away and we still are waiting to hear if there's a deal in washington. tonight president obama addressed the country in talkses to. there's still no answer, but tonight the president says work is being done. >> congressional leaders left the white house today without a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. but the leaders and the president are still trying. >> i'm modestly optimistic that an agreement can be achieved.

let's make sure that middle class families and the american economy and in fact the world economy isn't adversely impacted because people can't do their jobs. >> reporter: harry reid and mitch mccono agreed to spend the weekend working on a fall back plan that can pass both chambers of congress. >> some people will not like it, but that's where we are. >> reporter: president obama is pushing for a stop gap measure that would at least avoid tax increases on people earning less than $250,000. frustration is growing. a simple stop gap percent is not what men -- measure is not what many in washington hoped for. many blame president obama for the collapse of a bigger deal that would reduce spending and

cut the country's debt. >> it is the president's responsibility to lay out a plan and to bring people together. >> house members don't get back here tonight sunday night. president david wilson may be getting a remove of sorts after a lengthy public meeting months announced it is negotiating to keep him on until june 2014. his current contract expires in june of 2013. it was a rough year with two shootings on campus. the russian president signed a law banning americans from adopting russian children. a law that people say is heartbreaking and punishes no one but the children. one family says he just signed a death notice for thousands of orphans in his country. >> reporter: you may have heard of her, she won three gold

medals and a bronze in this past summer's paraolympic games in london. reaching goals she would have never reached if she had not been adopted at age 6 by her mother deborah. >> she did not have a wheelchair. she crawled on the floor. she was very anemic and was not expected to live languishings but being part of the clarksville family she grew into a champion both physically and socially. this is tatiana at the russian orphanage she was adopted from, serving as an inspiration for the children and staff there. and this is her trying to deliver a petition begging the president to not sign the law he did today which in fact devoys the opportunity -- destroys the opportunity she had with an american family. her story powerful enough for

anybody, anybody but the russian president. >> he just nailed the lid in the coffins. shame on him. shame on him for saying here's an ultimatum. i'm angry at the u.s. for something else. let's use the children as pawns. >> reporter: mcfaden should know. not only did she adopt one of her daughters from russian, she studied in moscow, ran her own adoption agency for 20 years and her nieces and nephews were adopted from russia too. conner and jack mcfaden are fraternal twins who would have been separated. at age 16, both americanized but have a unique understanding of this new law in their native russia. >> and they seem very upset because i don't know where i'd be. the kids don't have many more chances at a life that they could love. >> reporter: or a family they

can be part of. it is estimated that there are 750,000 orphans in russia, three quarters of a million kids who mcfaden says may now never know a life fulfilled. >> i'm devastated for the families. but for the children. they will grow up in an orphanage and will not know the love of a family. >> currently there are 46 russian children that have already been approved to be adopted by american families. deborah and some other organizations here in the states are asking to get russia to help those children come to america. but with the law signed this morning, there's not much hope for that or for any other future children to be adopted by american families. he was a famous face with the ravens and this weekend

neighbor of a man who ambushed ask killed firefighters on christmas evening has been arrested. he was accused of buying guns for william spangler. officials say she knew he was not supposed to have the guns because he was a felon. a strike has been averted now between shoreman on the gulf. both sides agreed to contract

extension until january 28th. without the extension dock workers from boston to texas could have gone on strike on saturday at midnight. a federal judge has given preliminary approval to a billion dollar class action settlement against toyota motor company. toyota says the deal will resolve hundreds of lawsuits from motorists who say the value of their vehicles dropped after a series of recalls. owners will receive information about the settlement and possibly cash. well imagine opening a box and finding a letter inside from someone begging you to help them. that's what happened to a woman who says she was getting ready to decorate her house for halloween. she found the letter in a halloween grave yard kit. when she opened it up this year, she found a letter in

broken english asking her to send the letter along to a human rights organization. >> the headstones were approximately 18 inches tall, 12 inches wide. and there were two of them put together, and the note was slipped in the middle of them. and then that whole package was wrapped in sealed cellophane. >> the note claimed that the halloween stuff was made in a labor camp in china. the writer explained that the workers worked 7 days a week for 15 hours with no breaks. she asked friends on facebook what to do about it and she turned it over to u.s. and customs officials. they are looking to see if the letter is truly real. the ravens are getting ready to finish the reg is a season. they have already been guaranteed a playoff game, but they would get some much needed

and now, maryland's most accurate forecast. all right. let's take a look and you see the size and scope and why we've been talking about it for days on end. a pretty decent storm heading in. already it's edging into garret county where they have already picked up half a foot of snow over the last week or so. it's snowy in the high country. no doubt about that. this is the first opening around for central maryland, eastern shore, we're going to see our snow closer to daybreak tomorrow. take a look at this, the wintery weather just west of the mountains and extending all the way to it deep south. back through st. louis. a pretty large looking system. a gulf coast weather maker and it will bring a mix of weptry weather tomorrow, but the -- wintery weather, but the peak intensity will probably happen when it passes us and that's

why we're not going to get huge totals out of this thing. all morning counties and including -- northern counties including howard and montgomery county. we're going to see some winter weather in the morning there. it's just a matter of the rain snow line changing that over. here's the freeze line now. just north and west of the city. we think this is going to dip south carolina toward daybreak tomorrow. the snow positions itself further south and then jerks back north during the course of the day. we start out as snow and some of us change to a mixed bag of rain and snow for the second part of the day for about half of the state. starting as all snow. we're spreading the state by 5:00, 6:00 in the morning.

then we ramp up the intense -- intensity toward 10:00 a.m. . the rain snow line drifting just out of southern maryland. at some point we may see the rain snow line all the way up to the i-95 corridor. we clear out for sunday, but it's going to be windy and cold. temperatures struggle to get above freezing tomorrow and they'll struggle on sunday. here's the storm setup as it comes through. again, pin wheeling through the state pretty quickly tomorrow, 2:00, 3:00, tapering the snow showers. a dry and cold and windy day on sunday. here are the totals again. 3-4 in carroll county westward. a 2-3-inch band from northern

hartford through warren county. tonight, snow showers by dawn and tomorrow we're talking 37, no, then a mish. gied 1-3-inch accumulations. that's what we're talking about. a quick check of the seven day shows the bottom line as this. we clear things out, but a cold windy day into 2013. another wintery mix on new year's day possible, but new year's eve looks good. >> we want to tell you about our live cut ins tomorrow during good morning america and then bring you live coverage from 9:00-10:00. we'll be right back.
